I haven't heard of 8 mm in pistol but certainly 9 mm (very popular) and 10
mm.

same as a .30 cal cartridge (30/100 of an inch).  Is it that simple?  Did
someone once decide that the international standard rifle cartridge shall
be the same as the American .30 cal bullet?  And if so, why?

And then there is 8 mm ammo, used in pistols, I believe.

Why the difference?
