NYC Transit accepts them in bus fareboxes, and also gives them in change when you buy a MetroCard at a machine.  I had to rescue two people on the M1 (Fifth/Madison & Park Aves) on Thanksgiving.  They had their fare, $3.00 (two people), but in $1 bills only.  The farebox doesn't take paper.  (Way too expensive to have $1 bill readers in 5000 fareboxes.)  I gave them three $1 coins, they put them in the farebox, and everyone was happy.

Time to get rid of this anachronism, but Congress doesn't have the will (same wimpout factor as with metric, which is why the $1 coin is relevant to us).
