GCE (General Certificate of Education) 'A'-levels (Advanced) are
indeed written examinations. They may have changed a bit since I did
mine, but as they are the exams one sits at the end of secondary
school education, and are what determines university entrance, I doubt
if they have changed that much. When I sat my first A-levels in 1972,
the syllabus had just gone all-SI, so I'd be surprised if it's
possible to do them in imperial!
