Shortly after the one dollar coin was established in Canada, the two-dollar
bill was replaced by a two-dollar coin by the same process.  That is, $2
bills were accepted by the banks, but only $2 coins were paid out.  The $1
coin is known popularly as the "loonie" because it has a loon on its back
side.  That has led to the $2 coin being called a "toonie".
