Last posting.  Continents are not simply defined as physically contiguous
land masses.  If they were, then Europe, Asia and Africa would be one
continent.  

To my understanding, continents are defined, at least in part, by 
the part of the earth's plating on which they rest, not by water, 
mountain, political, or language boundaries.  That's why  the western part 
of Russia is on the continent of Europe and as you head east, it becomes 
Asia.
