The dozen was used in the market place because of its factorability.
Arithmetic was usually developed base 10 because that is number of fingers
and thumbs that we have;  Since we no longer do arithmetic on our fingers,
12 would be a better choice of base.  Unfortunately it would be
prohibitively difficult now to change to base 12.  But don't overlook base
8 or 16.

I know of no case of arithmetic being done with base 12.

Don't worry.  The only ocurrance of 12 in the imperial mixture of units is
12 inches = 1 foot.  Until 1971 there were 12 pennies in a shilling.
