Your point is strong, Han, but let us not confuse "democracy" for manipulation posing 
as democracy. Anytime either of our two political parties makes an unpopular decision, 
the other party "leaps to the rescue". When Jimmy Carter's Democrats pushed 
metrication c. 1976, Ronald Regan's Republicans dismantled it by 1982. Although I feel 
people aren't as "SIphobic" as they used to be, meters and grams aren't going to win 
votes. There are probably many closet metric-supporters in goverment, even now, but 
they are wisely keeping silent. Also, let's face it: with a war going on, metrication 
just isn't an important issue ***at the moment***, and most those around now could 
care less about year 2009 and the EU's deadlines.
