Necessity is the mother of all inventions and this applies to Euro. In 1980's, American & Japanese companies competed aggressively and the European companies cannot cope up with that, since they had very small markets. In order to compete, they needed a common market. But common market could not be utilised fully without single currency and thus came the EURO.
So its not the idea of socialist politicians, but the need of the industries and jobs. That is the reason, they decided to dump their beloved currencies. In the same way, 10 ASEAN countries and China have agreed on a common market by 2010. They may go in for currency union also. 35 African countries are already ready to follow the European example in both common market & currency. All these are meant to promote global trade, understanding and cooperation.
