US industry through the TABD (Trans Atlantic Business Dialog) has been resisting effforts by the EU to impose the strict use of metric units in labeling for years. They pressured the EU to delay the imposition of directive 80/181, which was to go into effect on 2000-01-01, to 2010-01-01. They promised to petition the US government to change the FPLA (Fair Packaging $ Labeling Act), which now requires dual unit usage to, allow for metric only labels. This will eliminate a cost burden to businesses that would have to label in US/SI in the US and SI only in Europe. but, to this day, they have done nothing to get the FPLA amended.
