Whatever one may think about mandatory metrication, I see that the same old
lies and half truths are being peddled again on these links. Namely, that the
MM's have been convicted for selling goods in lb and oz. The truth is that they
had been using illegal scales and that they are entitled to price in both
systems and that in dealing with their customers they are entitled to use lb/oz.
Secondly, that it is a European imposition. Metric has been an issue in the UK
for at least 150 years.
The French law of 1837-07-04 was an example of mandatory metrication; it wiped
away all old French units and the corrupted metric ones adopted in 1812. In the
end, this law has been crucial: it marked the international take-off of the
metric system. France had been going through the same turmoil and upheaval for
about 50 years as Britain is going through now.
