I am placing this message on the forum of the Irish Times.
http://www.ireland.com.; On the homepage go to 'Breaking News", when there
you will find the forum and its subject is now: "Would you support the
introduction of a European Constitution?" It is a reaction a a post by
Stephen from the USA.

Certain (not all) Americans criticizing a 'European superstate' while their
country is one already! That is rich! What those Americans are really afraid
of is that Europe may one day be strong enough to compete better against the
USA and to hold its ground. We might start to reject demands from
conveyor-belts of American business demands to the EU like the Trans
Atlantic Business Dialogue (TABD), which was able to force the EU into
allowing animal testing (fiendish torture) for the benefit of the cosmetics
industry and which forced us till 2010 to semi-legalize the American
'system' of measuring units on the European continent. Now we can read on
American cosmetics products in our shops that they contain 1 or 5 or
whatever OZ.LIQ., French for US. fl.oz. which is not used in France and
which is illegal in the EU! Even in Britain and Ireland it was never a legal
unit, as these countries used the Imperial fluid ounce (28.35 mL). Our legal
metric units are also given but in an inferior secondary position:
5FL.OZ/OZ.LIQ/150 mL. If we had not given in to these demands the USA would
probably have started a trade war against the EU. We shouldn't have given in
to them, whatever!
What I want is an EU with a constitution, much more democratic than it is
now and keeping its vast array of cultures and languages and not an
Americanized group of 'sovereign(?)' countries with no self respect,
countries that fall on their knees before the demands of American business
and industrial pressure groups like the TABD.
