2002-03-11 Unfortunately, Marcus, if you were to have every American read this document and ask them if they agree or disagree with it, a vast majority would agree. We find it hard to accept, but propaganda as such is what feeds the American "patriot". Being the sole country using or fighting to continue to use FFU is seen as a badge of honour. If America is alone in doing something that the world has long ago abandoned it is even more reason to fight to keep it. It is a matter of American pride. It is proof that America is right, always right and everybody else is wrong. I have seen and read an increasing number of editorials and articles in the newspaper over the past few weeks expousing this very idea. That the US is in the right and everybody is jealous of "our freedom". And that is why they hate the US so much. How do you deal with such a attitude?
In the past 6 months, the US vs. the world has taken a new twist. Instead of the attacks humbling the US it had the opposite effect. America is more arrogant and full of itself then ever before. And this attitude, more than any argument of logic and reason for adopting metric, will be used not only to try drive metric what little metric is in use out of the US, but to try to force the world to deal with the US in FFU. And notice, the enemies of metric do not use the terms English System, or American System, but Customary. It is an attempt to give this hodge-podge a sense of being part of our customs, culture and history. And not only ours, but all the peoples of the world, going all of the way back to the beginnings of civilisation. I know nothing about the European Journal. Maybe someone more familiar with the publication can tell us who owns it and what their policy on metric is.
