This is what my treadmill manual textually says about the above. Fat burning To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a relatively low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body uses easily accessible carbohydrate calories (SIC) for energy. Only after the first few minutes does your body begin to use stored fat calories (SIC) for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill until your heart rate is near one of the lower two numbers in your training zone. It may also be helpful to set the speed control on the console to FAT BURN to help you maintain the proper intensity level. And that's it! Nothing else. I started the treadmill for a few minutes to find out if I could identify the ratio between these two, and as far as I can tell that relationship appears to be 3.21 to 1, i.e. cal to fat cal. I also noticed that the speed does not seem to change this ratio significantly. There, I hope this was helpful in some way, Pat. I'm still puzzled though by these numbers and do not know what to make of them. When I run on my treadmill I usually end up spending about 2-2.2 MJ per half-hour of running.
