In USMA 18794 Carleton regaled us with a long despatch from the Washigton
Post about the war in Afganistan, and repeated it in HTML. It appeared to
be a quote from ABC television. The point of Carleton's posting would seem
to be the mention of "35 miles", 500 yards, and 10 000 feet, which were
presumably translations of the original interview with US General Franks
who probably said 55 km, 500 m, and 3000 m.
What I was actually pointing out was that [yards] was in brackets, which meant that the person being quoted had said something else that the reporter, or the editor, CHANGED to [yards], intentionally.
