I think the EU played a fast one on the TABD. They
granted them the another 10 year delay, knowing it would be the last. The
TABD thought that since they got a delay in '89 and another delay in '99
can expect still another in '09. Just do nothing and complain that they
are not ready again and economic hardship will result.
But, the TABD relied on the European Commission to keep
granting them their delays. But by 2010 the Commission won't exist.
With an elected EU Parliament in control it won't be that easy to get a
delay. In fact, a new nation, such as the EU will want to exert its power
and will not want to give in to the likes of a foreign interest group like the
TABD, especially since it represents the interests of a competitor in
power.

The point I am trying to make is Americans see no need to use
metric for export and FFU for domestic. If it is their policy to
use only FFU, they will use for domestic and export. If it is their
policy to use some metric or all metric, they will use it in all
instances. But, never will they use one system for one market and
another system for a different market. And yes, the EU may
complain, but the TABD has been ignoring their complaints and fighting
them on this policy for years, and up to now, the EU has always backed
down. Let's hope in 2010, the EU will be strong enough to say
no.

If TABD is true to form, we can expect
no action at all, and then, in the spring of 2009, another whining and
pathetic statement from TABD about how they are still "not ready" and "need
more time". The EU has to draw a line in the sand this time and say "Not
again, not this time, not any more."
Sounds like one of my neighbors,
who in our annual neighborhood meeting came up with another new excuse this
year why a much-needed street light can't be installed at the curb by her
house. Every year the prior excuse is shown to be invalid; every year
she comes up with a new and different excuse.
