Dear Sandy, Who is the manager at the NCTM for WLME-8? I downloaded the pdf file for WLME-8 and discovered statements which prolong the handicapping of US students (now K-16 not merely K-12) with respect to units of measurement in the purported "world's largest" mathematics event" (WLME-8). Deviations from standard rules are in Activities 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. For example: the speed of lightning is given as "334,800,000 miles (54,000,000 km) per hour". This expression violates NIST rules for number of significant digits, symbols for the decimal marker, symbols for units, and implies that SI is of secondary importance in science. Gene Mechtly.
