Geof Goodes of CBC phoned me, on Saturday I believe, about making a program
about Canadian metrication. Apparently on his program on Sunday,
yesterday,.he played a recording of our conversation I did not hear it. I
suggested that the Labor Day weekend would be a good time for such a
program because it would be the 25th anniversary of the weekend when all
the speed limit signs in Canada were changed to km/h. I don't remember
saying anything else noteworthy. I may have added that a professor of
psychology at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, predicted in August,
1977, that there would be carnage on the thruways when the speed limit
increased from 60 to 100. In the event the change was a non-event; there
was no jump in the death rate, probably because Canadian drivers don't pay
much attention to speed limits.
