Bill:

As the two Apple symbols are unique to Apple computers, they will not appear
on other systems. The only way to make such a symbol appear on a PC is to
use a font that includes it (and then it would of course be a generic
apple). That would defeat the goal of restricting ourselves to text-only
formatting.

Not that there's going to be much call for apples in messages about SI. <g>

Sorry that your system was not set up to receive the delta-code that my
system () sent. But HTML is not necessarily the best solution unless
everybody has it.

In the meantime, I continue to advocate (and practice):

(1) avoid using special symbols in email entirely if possible;

(2) when necessary to use them, always include an explanation (and example*)
of what the symbol should be so that the reader may mentally translate it
even if his/her system does not.

* Here's an example of such an explanation, with examples:
The symbol after the phrase "my system" in my first paragraph above should
be the solid-apple symbol; that is, the Apple computer trademark symbol in
solid (as opposed to outline) form. Here are three of the character I'm
referring to: , , . I'm curious what they looked like on your end if you
don't have an Apple computer.
