Transco is the distribution arm of what was British Gas. Pipes tend to get laid alongside/under roads. Even if they are in a field, there will usually be warning signs on the highway where contractors' trucks etc. have to cross, have access, etc. More details should be on the BWMA site. BTW, the UKMA site has just passed the 30 000 hits mark, after less than 3 years, while the original BWMA site (the newer ones don't have hit counters) languishes at 23 000, even though it started 2 years earlier.
