There are claims on various websites that the Weights and Measures Act
1963 is relevant. I wanted to get an online version of that act. There
is a lot of juicy UK government data available on the web.
Unfortunately, it only goes back about 15 years and therefore does not
contain the 1963 Act. In any case, a current definition is in the
Weights and Measures Act 1985 (Metrication) (Amendment) Order 1994:

"YARD = 0.9144 metre"
"Inch = 1/36 yard"
