I saw an ad today in our local paper. It was paid for by the
International Collectors Society, who is willing to sell for some
unspecified amount New York State quarters modified to carry the
likeness of Betty Boop on the obverse. The photograph has a caption that
states the actual diameter is 24 mm. No inch-equivalent is given. If
this were a normal numismatic item, I would not have been surprised, but
this sort of thing probably appeals more to the more casual collector.

The actual specification for the quarter (usmint.gov) is 24.26 mm. At
one time it was illegal to modify a U.S. coin, though one was allowed to
destroy it completely; I don't know what the current law is. And Betty
Boop admirers surely would think that her vital statistics -- any of
them -- exceed 24 mm. But it was nice to see an ad for the retail market
that omitted inches. Boo-boop-de-boop!
