In my Enclopaedia Britannica 11th Edition, vol. 24, p. 478 I found:
"The history of the battle of scew threads in England, America, Germany,
Switzerland and France would occupy a volume . The subject is highly
technical, involving practical points concerned with manufacture as well as
with questions of strength and durability. We can can merely state the
fact that the threads now recognized as standard are included in about
eight great systems, out of about sixty that have been advoctated and
systematized."
