Dear All,

>From time to time one or other of the contributors to this list refer to the
drop-by-drop approach to metrication.

Some are supporters of the drop-by-drop approach while others denigrate it.

Recently I was reading 'The Penguin Book of Twentieth-Century Speeches'.

When Brian MacArthur edited this collection (in 1993) he clearly had in mind
the drop-by-drop approach that public speeches have on social change when he
selected this small section of a speech given by Robert Kennedy in 1966 as
his frontispiece.

'Each time a man stands up for an ideal,
or acts to improve the lot of others,
or strikes out against injustice,
he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope
and crossing each other from a million
different centers of energy and daring,
those ripples build a current that can
sweep down the mightiest walls of
oppression and resistance.'

I couldn't help but think of these words of Robert Kennedy's in a
metrication context.

Cheers,
