The first subway in London was the Metropotitan line. Construction started in 1853 it started running in 1863. The Metropolitain of Paris and the Metro of Washington were named after the Metropolitan line of London. It was, of course, steam-driven and there were gaps in its tunnel to let the smoke out. The old-timers maintained that the smoke was good for ones health. In Berlin the Ringbahn was opened in 1871 and the Stadtbahn in 1878. The Stadtbahn was an elevated railway. My 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica does not mention the Untergrund or U-bahn. Joseph B.Reid 17 Glebe Road West Toronto M5P 1C8 Tel. 416 486-6071
