This response shows why I don't generally use the degree symbol. Even on my 
own computer, CharMap indicates an alt-code number that brings up the wrong 
symbol.

Normally, of course, 42 would be just fine. However, the local paper 
reported it as 107.1 F, which tied for the highest temperature on record,

Add this to the list of good suggestions that would improve the SI system 
but that don't stand much chance of being adopted.

I'll refrain from a diatribe on the down side of large, bureaucratic 
standards organizations.
