I have not been paying much attention to the discussions on angles.
However, I did notice an old road sign the other day that was '1 in 8'.
I remarked to a friend how rare it was to see a ratio because UK road
signs are almost always shown as %. I think that the UK was behind the
rest of Europe in using percentages for gradient road signs.

Note that the ratio is still permitted although the text shows this as
'1:5' rather than '1 in 5'.

So the ratio was another method of measuring angle which has been
dropped in favour of percentage i.e. 100% = a right angle.
