Good points John

Actually the letter 'm' stands for meter, milli, mega,

male, married, etc, unless the upper case / lower case

is specified.

Is it possible to put a dot '.' above letter m and
claim that the 'm dot' is the symbol for the meter,
just like the 'red octagon' is for the stop sign
worldwide.

Similarly we can place the dot above letter 'g' for
gram, 'l' for liter, etc.

After all putting a dot will not take much effort in
books, internet media, traffic signs, etc.
