Dear Terry, The old ton has definitely disappeared in Australia. When we first 'went metric' there was an attempt to encourage a pronunciation for tonne to rhyme with the name 'Don'. However, this didn't take, generally, but very occasionally we hear this pronunciation on a radio or TV interview.
