Even though Aldi stores (http://www.aldi.com) are *STRICTLY* cash only
in Germany, their USA stores do accept 'debit' cards.  This is because
the various USA public assistance programs (AKA 'Food Stamps') now use
them instead of their old paper vouchers for distriduting their
benefits.  This was mainly to increase the programs' security,
preventing the vouchers from being traded in a black market.

BTW, Aldi claims that 4 out of 5 Germans consumers regularly shop at
their deep-discount grocery stores.  Their USA stores (part of Aldi-Sud)
are mainly in the Midwest and Northeast (there are two here in Appleton).
