Well..as the United States is concerned, the Constitution states 
that the government should "fix weights and measures."  Therefore 
keeping a level of accuracy for trading, documentation, and legal 
issues.  I would say a government by definition HAS to be involved 
in what weights and measures are used to prevent fraud and further 
the use of standards that would (hopefully) result in greater efficiencies 
that could benefit no one but the citizens in which the government 
is charged with protecting.
