I like how the media decides what is, and is not, acceptable household terminology:
Having just got back from business in DC the last couple days, where everyone's a little on edge, I was constantly bombarded with the term "tarot card", as if it's something everyone's supposed to know. Guess what - I don't know it and never it before in my life! But then a common term like "meter" or "kilogram", used by 95% of the world's population the last zillion years, has to be translated, and explained, and re-translated, and re-explained.... Pardon my little rant! <g> Nat
