In the Roman calendar the word 'calends' refers to the first day of each month. The other main Roman day each month was the 'ides' the fifteenth day of each month. Remember the quote from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, 'Beware the ides of March.' By identifying two days each month it gave the Romans a simple way of spacing things like market days at approximately half-month intervals without the complications of those end of month calculations that are necessary because of variable length months.
