You have to first assume that:

1. It was an apple. Some versions merely say 'fruit'.

2. That the fruit struck anyone on it's downward path. This is not
universally agreed.

3. That it occurred at all. It may have merely been a pre or post-hoc
thought experiment. Newton himself did not write about the story.
