I don't design trucks for Ford, or anybody else for that matter, but I bet
that those trucks that say 1 ton can equally support 1 t. Those same
designs are sold outside the US, in countries where 1 ton, even the US
spelling is interpreted to mean 1000 kg. If the trucks were only designed
to hold 900 kg, and people loaded it with 1000 kg of material, the truck
would be damaged. If word got out that the trucks could only hold 900 kg,
even though they are advertised as being 1 t (meaning tonne) trucks, Ford
(and others if they do the same) could lose a lot of business.

On the other hand, if an American assumes the word means 2000 lb or about
900 kg, and only loads it as such, he/she is in no danger of overloading the
truck. Thus it is to everyone's advantage if the trucks are designed with
the tonne and not the ton in mind. If Ford (and others) were to design both
a 1 ton and a 1 t truck then we would have that old double production ghost
haunting us. Meaning high costs all around. This is avoided by a one size
fits all vehicle.

As to your comment below, you have made some gross technical errors. The
use of the tonne is not a measure of any type of pulling capacity, but of
loading capacity. It is how much mass the vehicle can support, not how much
it can pull. Also, if you were talking about pulling power, you would want
to use the unit watts. If you wanted to know how much the vehicle can pull,
they you would say pulling force, and that would be in newtons, not
kilograms or tonnes.
