Dear Matthew and All, Most newspapers would use:
$5k = $5000 They are simply unaware of other choices, such as: 5 k dollars = five thousand dollars = 5000 $ However, the practice that amuses (and confuses) me most is when a newspaper refers to millions or more. It seems to me that the most common practice is: $5m followed by $5 mil or $5 mi. Journalists and editors seem to have no knowledge of mega (M) as a symbol so, to them, 5 M$ is not considered as a choice.
