The English newspapers don't want to risk losing even one reader by using SI measures, and this holds back full conversion. There's intense rivalry between all the major UK papers - almost like English soccer - you dare not lose! The Blair government has had to back down on the illegal removal of metric road signs recently as they are in a precarious position for the next election.
