I agree, and would like to see the same tolerance extended to words such as
"tonne" and "micron" even though they are unofficial.  ISTM that the whole
point of the metric system is convenience (ease of use) for the people who
will use it.  "Simplifying" it by removing some of that convenience is false
economy, IMHO.

Obviously this is somewhat context dependent.  Usages that make sense in a
newspaper article don't necessarily make sense in a lab report.
