Dear John and All, Of the regular Australian contributors to the discussions on this list, I am in Geelong and the closest to Canberra at about 750 kilometres away.
Brenton is next at about 1600 kilometres away in Adelaide, and Mike is furthest away in Perth, which is about 4800 kilometres from Canberra. Yesterday we experienced a sky in Geelong that was filled with smoke from the Canberra fire as well as smoke from several other fires burning in the north-east of Victoria. However, despite the smoke we are not directly threatened by these fires. The fires are still burning as I write this tonight (Wednesday) and the weather forecasts for Friday are for strong northerly winds with a temperature of about 37��C in Melbourne and an even hotter day of about 42��C on Saturday.
