I should point out that researching data for the table, I noticed 20 or more percent discrepancies among the various references. The posted values are averages.

Very interesting! Makes it easy to pick out non-dense foods to fill up on without packing in the calories.
Ignoring the "no calorie" stuff like diet pop and tea, I see a factor of 60 difference between the most calorie dense food and the least calorie dense food. Also interesting is that it is roughly the same ratio whether based on mass (72) or volume (60).
Comparing the data from the USDA database and Corinne Netzer's "Complete Book of Food Counts" (5th edition), I frequently see differences on the order of 10 - 20%.
