Subject: [ISO8601] Hmm. New ISO document.

Very interesting to see the ISO web site has a piece introducing ISO 8601
 at:  <
http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/popstds/datesandtime.html>.

Also quite intriguing to recognise many of the words as being taken from
things that I have written over the years.

This bit surprised me:

>> ISO 8601 will find usage in computer programmes, logbooks, contest
entries, QSL cards, magazine reports, Web pages, e-mail, statistics, forms
of all kinds, administrations and businesses, in customs and transportation,
in e-commerce and academia, and in all types of international activity. <<

especially the section:

>> computer programmes (sic), logbooks, contest entries, QSL cards, magazine
reports, Web pages, e-mail <<

as it is lifted directly from a very specialist proposal that I wrote back
in about 1996. I doubt that the ISO beaurocrat who "wrote" that piece even
knows what "QSL cards" are, or even what sort of "logbook" I was referring to.

Interesting indeed. Nice to see some progress, in whatever form it appears.

It would also be nice to see the standard available online at a much reduced
cost sometime soon, though the main points concerning internet usage are
nicely summarised in RFC 3339 anyway now.

If someone submits that site to the relevant ODP section, I'll add it to the
listings during the next editing session. The section is also looking for
any other useful sites. If you see any, then please submit them. They must
be sites that explain or promote the standard, not just sites that are using
the standard.

Cheers,

Ian.
