Which furthers my point of just referring to 'it' as "the metric system" when dealing with the media, companies, and people when writing to support the "metric system."

Further stating that it's SI and giving long wordage explaining such just dilutes the message.

Unfortunately the answer is an emphatic no! Most people in metric countries just know SI by 'metric' However, they do accept the fact that metric MAY be constantly "changing" or improving. So this doesn't bother them.
