Actually, not entirely true, Carleton.  Simple, quote prices by the square decimeter then.  As a matter of fact, square meterage of buildings, etc would be better served if quoted to that level of accuracy!  By doing so, buying carpets would be a breeze.

Example: Say the area of my living room is 9.57 m2.  If price is 15.5 cents per dm2, final price would simply be: 957 x .155!

What actually happened is that the carpet companies, in converting from square yard pricing to square foot pricing, built in a hidden price increase.  Nine times the new price per square foot was more than the old price per square yard, but because the dollar amount per unit went down, the public was appropriately bamboozled.
