Quite. I am a member of both the USMA and UKMA lists. They have a known finite set of people. The advantage of these two lists is that discussions should be focussed and regional. However I often see discussions on the lists that do not fulfil these criteria. These would be ideal on a newsgroup. Current newsgroups already have a lot of metric related threads so there are people out there that have a passing interest but are unlikely to join a mailing list even if they knew about one. I am aware that a specialist group might get a lot of flaming and trolling, but even if it does, we are no worse off.
