I suggest creating two separate groups:
us.issues.metric-system -- Advocacy for and against getting
(or possibly the USA to fully adopt and use the
talk.politics.usa.metric-system) metric system like everyone else.
sci.measurement.metric -- Discussion of the metric system
itself - how to use it, how its
parts relate to each other, how to
convert from old units.
This not only clears up namespace issues (since sci.* is certainly the
place for the practical topics, but politics does not belong there), it
also allows people with practical questions to get answers without having
to wade through the political stuff.
I have been discussing the us.* group idea with Henrietta Thomas, and I
plan to submit an RFD for us.issues.metric-system in the next few days
unless there's a good reason I shouldn't (I don't want to step on the
toes of the proponent of misc.metric-system, if there is one yet).
The us.* proposal, if there is one, will be discussed in us.config, so
those interested are urged to subscribe to that group as well as to
news.groups.
