I think this topic is getting a little out of hand. I don't think there is any real good reason to metricate football or even horse racing (which still uses furlongs). By doing so, we will only alienate the very people we want to embrace metric in their daily lives. If I am not mistaken, the goal of metrication is not to completely eliminate colloquial units, rather to make metric the primary and predominate way of doing business and going about daily life. Some traditions are sure to stay. What would be nice is if in some day (in the not too distant future) a generation of Americans need to ask "What is a yard and why do we use them in football?"
