The UK seems to be moving towards the US definition. I get the impression
that the term is sometimes avoided because of this confusion.

Which trillion?

In USA:
        1 billion = 10 to the 9th
        1 trillion = 10 to the 12th.

In most other countries:
        1 billion = 10 to the 12th
        1 trillion = 10 to the 18th.
