John,

I think that the USA never used the Imperial Gallon. That unit dates from 1824. The US Gallon is an old English one, the smaller so-called Queen Ann's Wine Gallon, that was brought to America by the old English settlers. They brought other gallons with then, but those units perished.

The USA did not proceed with Britain in 1824 when the imperial system was established; Canada did however, so in that country the Imperial Gallon was used. That also holds good for all other British Commonwealth nations before they went metric.

I do not know in what units the USA exports goods to Mexico, but I know that what is used in the USA is not the imperial system. It is called US Customary units.

Subject: [USMA:27151] Imperial gallon

Could someone tell me if the U S ever used the imperial Gallon?  Where did the U S gallon come from?  In Canada we haven't used the gallon since around the early eighty's.  I have another question.  When the U S exports goods to Mexico do they export the goods in metric or imperial?  Thanks for all your help.  I would like to say again I really apreciate all the help I get from this site, and all the neat people on it.
