Like others have explained in great detail, nautical miles correlate directly
to navigational techniques used for global navigation.  It's as simple as
that.  It's a specialized application used for a specialized application.

I'm more concerned with getting those darn inches off display device specs!  
Inches for screen size really needs to go away...but that has nothing to do
with nautical miles.
