Last Thursday, I encountered in an old file the name of a hamlet or townland near Nijmegen: Tienakker. Roughly translated: Tenacres. This is a strong indication that the akker (acre) has once been used as a unit of area in our part of the country. The akker was roughly 0.5 ha. There are also villages in Germany with names like Vieracker. Now the akker is any field for crop-growing in The Netherlands and Germany. I wonder wat the BWMA would say: THE DUTCH AND THE GERMANS USE THE BRITISH ACRE!!!!
