Where Mathematics Comes From: How the Embodied Mind Brings
Mathematics into Being (2000) by George Lakoff and Rafael E. Nuñez
discusses neurological research into what happens in the human mind
when it learns and uses math, including measurement. I think that
several people on this list would find this book interesting. Th main
arguments and the basic research are presented in two early chapters,
so you don't have to read the whole book to get the basic argument.
I have references for other research into how people learn math and the
neurology of math, but this is one of the best.
